Due anni passati a forgiare un suono che è diventato molto più della somma di due stili la cui personalità è ormai diventata marchio di fabbrica, The Shipwreck Bag Show è un gruppo, una band che suona dal vivo e con questo album propone dodici brani che non è azzardato definire canzoni. Senza dimenticarsi della ricerca sonora portata avanti negli anni, il duo si dedica a cantare e suonare blues: ovviamente canzoni ubriache e sbilenche , ovviamente blues zoppo, zozzo, evocativo e primitivo. We are glad to announce a new co-production between us and Wallace Records. Xabier Iriondo and Roberto Bertacchini are together again after two years spent developing a sound that now is much more than the sum of two styles. The Shipwreck Bag Show is a live performing band and with this album presents twelve new tracks that we can easily call “songs”. This duo sings the blues: drunk and lopsided songs, cripple, evocative and primal blues.

[lang_all]This past year was very satisfying in terms of great reviews and appearances on many important music magazines or websites. Long Song is just a small label that struggles to produce interesting and different music, and we’re glad that our efforts are more and more noticed by the international and Italian press. Thanks first of all to all the amazing artists that recorded and worked with us.
These are the most remarkable achievements we got, in no particular order (you can find most of them under the individual CD’s pages on the site):

• “Dandelions on Fire” gathered more or less 15 fantastic reviews on most of the best Italian rock magazines and websites (including Rolling Stone, il Mucchio Selvaggio, Buscadero, Rockerilla..) and on some of the most prestigious international ones (The Wire, Signal to Noise…). Some critics included it in their personal 2008 top ten.
• Nicola Cipani’s “The Ill-tempered Piano” was welcomed by many magazines as one of the most clever and totally intriguing debuts of the year. The words spent about it are probably the best ever said about a Long Song release. Some journalists included it among their personal 2008 top ten.
• Downtown Music Gallery guru and owner Bruce Lee Gallanter included “Technicolor” and “Rings Of Fire” among his “best 101 records of 2008” list
• Technicolor was another massive critical success, appearing on both rock and jazz magazines and confirming that we are doing a great job in moving between these two our favourite styles of ours.
• “Craig Green + David King” cover was chosen, in a limited group of 5 titles, by All About Jazz New York for best artwork. Elena Raffa did it. Elena is an amazing graphic designer and has done or contributed to many Long Song covers so far: Dandeions, Technicolor, Rings of Fire.
• We entered the Downbeat critics poll!! Incredible to say, but Plays Monk, without almost any concert or promotional events during 2008, ranked at number 10 out of 12 in the acoustic group rising star section. This is really something!

A nice new friend of ours, mr. Bert Shapiro, sent us an amazing new DVD titled “Elliott Sharp: doing the Don’t” he assembled about our great pal Elliott Sharp.

The DVD is an incredible overview of his whole career and biography of Elliott, and it’s a pleasure to watch from the beginning to the end.

Elliott is a master and has explored so many styles and works on so many levels: he’s a blues player, an improviser, an avant garde artist, a saxophonist and clarinet player, a composer and arranger, and so much more. Elliott himself said to me last year he’s working and concentrating more and more in order to become an “author” and composer more than “just” a musician, and this DVD is a beautiful trip through all of this, concentrating a lot on his recent years in various contexts. Lots of live footage as well as contributions of friends anc collaborators make this DVD a precious document for any Elliott fan, and it’s highly recommended.

Who loves Elliott knows what he can do and how much unpredictable he can be. The man is clever as few I’ve ever met, and this DVD proves it all.

The Project:

Tenor/baritone/composer Daniele Cavallanti and drummer/percussionist/composer Tiziano Tononi, from Milano, Italy, have been playing together for the last thirty years. Since 1980 have been co-leading the band Nexus. Considered an historical avant garde Italian band, Nexus has been voted a number of times best band by critics in the annual jazz magazine Musica Jazz “Top Jazz Referendum”. They are also founding members of the celebrated Italian Instabile Orchestra. Both with Nexus and the Italian Instabile Orchestra, Cavallanti and Tononi performed all over Europe, United States, Canada and Japan and during their career they have been playing and recording with some of the most representative Italian jazz musicians such as: Enrico Rava, Gianluigi Trovesi, Giancarlo Schiaffini, Giorgio Gaslini and with a number of international jazz masters such as: Raphael Garrett, Radu Malfatti, Barre Phillips, Oliver Lake, Leroy Jenkins, Glenn Ferris, Mark Dresser, Herb Robertson, Steve Lacy,  Dave Liebman, Stuart Copeland, Andrew Cyrille, Maggie Nicols, Dewey Redman, Muhal Richard Abrahms, Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton, Roswell Rudd, Nels Cline, Elliot Sharp, William Parker, Hamid Drake, Willem Breuker, Wolter Wierbos, Jerry Granelli, Evan Parker, Paul Lytton, Jean-Jacques Avenel, Oliver Johnson, Michel Godard.

On this brand new CD, produced by Fabrizio Perissinotto, who originally conceived and commissioned the project to the two musicians, Cavallanti and Tononi present two long and ambitious suites (“Faces” by Daniele Cavallanti and “Phases” by Tiziano Tononi) for an extraordinary high level octet that features American violin rising star Jenny Scheinman, Emanuele Parrini on viola, Achille Succi on alto saxophone and bass clarinet, Massimo Mariani on guitar, Giovanni Maier on double and electric bass and Pacho on percussion.

FROM FABRIZIO PERISSINOTTO, PRODUCER:
I’ve always appreciated in the past the works by Daniele and Tiziano with extended ensembles, but at the same time I had my own precise concepts about how I would eventually organize one of theirs on my label. So one day this idea came to me of an octet with two horns, two violins (I’ve always wanted to collaborate with the lovely Jenny Scheinman, and this was the perfect chance) and two guitars plus a rhythm section. Then one guitar would be substituted by a percussion set and the focus would be more on the interplay possibilities between the two violins and the two horns, which surely are infinite. The starting point was to first build a mix of strongly composed and arranged material, with lots of harmonisations and “symphonic” elements where all the eventual solos and improvisations would  always be anchored to this base and be a part of the whole instead of  dominating it. Tiziano and Daniele were “challenged” by my exact suggestions on how to create something that had to be full of lyrical tension, drama, power but at the same time always under control. Like a gigantic, fascinating, almost frightening, steam train running fast but always well placed on its rails. In the end we got two long, complex and adventurous suites , displaying many of Cavallanti and Tononi musical influences and proving once more their great ability to write beautiful music and get the best out of the musicians they play with, who were all fabulous during the sessions.

The final result went way beyond my expectations and I’m very proud to have produced and released this music, that embodies a lot of this label’s visions

Phases/Faces is Tiziano Tononi at his core-composing…extended forms or suites have always been a trademark in his production, and date back to his work for his historical group Nexus as well as for his celebrated and prize-winning solo projects (dedicated to giants of Black Music, are meant to be a reflection on the past to become the future of the present day…), on top of all of them “Awake Nu – A tribute to Don Cherry” and “We Dit It, We Did It (Rahsaan and the None)” dedicated to Rahsaan Roland Kirk. His music embraces many different elements – folk music (jazz), minimalism, 20th Century western contemporary tradition (quoting Ornette “music that guys can read…”), post-rock – all blended together by his view of music as one, a mysterious big alchemic/sonic picture that contains it all…have fun.

FROM DANIELE CAVALLANTI:

About “Faces”: more than any particular musical reference, besides the ones that, in general, have always been inspiring in his composing and playing (Trane, Ornette, Charlie Haden’s Liberation Orchestra, Keith Jarret’s American quartet and many more) Daniele Cavallanti says that the music and movements of this work have mainly been inspired by certain movies atmospheres and directors, whose names are clearly indicated as title tracks.

Ho sempre apprezzato in passato i lavori di Daniele e Tiziano con ampi collettivi di musicisti, ma allo stesso tempo ho sempre avuto le mie precise idee su come avrei eventualmente organizzato e prodotto un loro progetto del genere. Così un giorno mi è venuta in mente per loro un tipo di formazione a ottetto con due fiati, due violini (ho sempre voluto lavorare con la favolosa Jenny Scheinman, e questa sarebbe stata l’occasione perfetta), due chitarre e basso e batteria. Una delle due chitarre è stata poi sostituita da delle percussioni e il tutto si è focalizzato maggiormente sulle possibilità di interplay tra fiati e archi, che sono sicuramente infinite. Il punto di partenza quindi scelto doveva essere per me un mix molto d’impatto di parti scritte e arrangiate, con parecchie armonizzazioni ed elementi “sinfonici”, dove tutti gli assoli e le improvvisazioni si sarebbero ancorate a questa base, come una parte dell’intero corpo musicale, piuttosto che dominarlo dal di sopra.
Tiziano e Daniele sono stati quindi “sfidati” dai miei precisi suggerimenti su come creare qualcosa che fosse caratterizzato da tensione lirica, dramma e grande forza esecutiva, ma che allo stesso tempo rimanesse sempre ben controllato e ricco di energia spesa con lucidità. Se possiamo usare un metafora efficace e suggestiva: come un gigantesco, affascinante al punto di incutere quasi timore, treno a vapore, che corre possente e fumante ma sempre ben saldo sui suoi binari.
Alla fine abbiamo ottenuto due lunghe, complesse e avventurose suite, che meritano molti ascolti per essere apprezzate a fondo, e che mettono in mostra le sempre numerose influenze musicali di Tononi e Cavallanti (a Voi il piacere di scoprirle o riscoprirle), e danno prova ancora una volta della loro capacità di scrivere bellissima musica e di ottenere il meglio dai musicisti con cui lavorano, che sono stati tutti favolosi durante le session di registrazione.

Quasto lavoro è andato ben oltre le mie migliori aspettative, e sono estremamente fiero di averlo pensato, prodotto e reso disponibile: rappresenta alla perfezione molte delle visioni musicali della Long Song Records.

Craig Creen + David King: Eclectic, experienced and creative guitar player Craig Green plus celebrated and critically acclaimed drummer David King (from the Bad Plus and Happy Apple) will release in some months an excting and vibrant duo collaboration on Long Song Records. Totally improvised music in an odd setting (with piano from time to time, played by D.King), electric and also acoustic, working in many moods ranges. sketches of inventiveness and freshness all over. groovey and spacey, physical and ethereal, gentle and stinging. Music coming out of their hands and mind with an almost telepathic empathy, that gives life to true little “compositions”, as if written in advance.

Nicola Cipani “The Illl-Tempered Piano”: Nicola Cipani’s “Ill-Tempered Piano” is a suprising and playful album of solo improvisations played on broken and untuned pianos. Cipani’s accomplished melodic and rhythmic approach and his responsiveness to each instrument’s raw potential set this project apart. The recordings were made over the span of two years in different New York City warehouses, on several keyboard instruments (among the pianos you hear also a clavichord), some of which are so damaged as to be hardly recognizable — but each piece takes the peculiarities of its instrument as a starting point, not as a limitation. What results is a collection of fresh, clever and fully-realized sound experiments performed on the strange landscape of each piano. The album is unpredictable and captivating — one to be heard and re-heard.
Ecco due nuovi album per la stagione autunnale Long Song:

Craig Creen + David King: Craig Green, chitarrista estremamente eclettico e creativo dell’Idaho, dotato di uno stile diretto, pungente e vitale, si è unito al batterista David King (uno degli strumentisti più lodati e particolari dell’ultima generazione) del famoso e acclamato piano trio Bad Plus (nonché dell’altrettanto noto trio Happy Apple) per dare vita ad una serie di duetti improvvisati, sia elettrici che acustici. Musica fresca, inventiva, sempre comunque con un nucleo melodico che rimanda a temi con echi “roots”, profondi e di ampio respiro. Musica dotata di groove, fisica o eterea, aggressiva o ipnotica, rarefatta o urticante a seconda dei momenti, con qualche schizzo di follia e ironia a condire il tutto. C’è un empatia quasi telepatica tra i due, e le improvvisazioni mutano (come spesso succede con i musicisti di valore) in piccole composizioni fatte e finite, che crescono e si stampano nella memoria con il passare degli ascolti.
David King inoltre suona il piano in alcuni pezzi, e questo è il suo esordio su disco in questo ruolo, mostrando la sua bravura anche con questo strumento.
Un disco fiero e positivamente energico.

Nicola Cipani “The Illl-Tempered Piano” è il primo album del pianista Nicola Cipani, che esegue improvvisazioni su pianoforti rotti e scordati – un debutto sorprendente per la varietà delle soluzioni ritmico-melodiche e per la
reattività dell’esecutore alle insolite caratteristiche di ogni singolo strumento. Le registrazioni sono state realizzate nell’arco di due anni in vecchie fabbriche e magazzini di New York, su pianoforti(la collezione include però anche un clavicordo) in alcuni casi tanto danneggiati da potersi riconoscere a stento; ma l’idiosincrasia di ogni strumento, più che come limite, è affrontata come nuovo punto di partenza. Dagli strani paesaggi acustici di questi pianoforti esce una raccolta di esperimenti sonori sorprendentemente freschi, intensi e compiuti. Una musica imprevedibile ma evocativa – da ascoltare e riascoltare

Hi to everybody, thanks to those hardcore fans who keep on following us and take a look at the site from time. Carrying on with this label is quite hard, especially supporting the kind of music we support. It’s a huge labour of love. It’s a job I can do during my free time. But I keep on keeping on. I try to follow my vision and release just what I think can fit this label. Many critics from Jazz and Rock are following us with interest and try to give us their best support. I have my own idea about the music I like and move on. What do we have coming after the summer? Many new projects: the main and most important one (a HUGE production!) is an amazing octet work (“Rings of Fire”) by Daniele Cavallanti (saxophone) & Tiziano Tononi (drums and percussion), featuring violin star Jenny Scheinman and other amazing Italian players (details coming soon). And then we lately recorded three almost purely improvised sessions, featuring some of the best players from the Italian rock/avant/jazz scene (Craig David was the special guest in one of these) . Also: we are releasing at the beginning of September the new fabulous work by Craig Green and David King (see details in the “upcoming” section) and the surprising Nicola Cipani (always “upcoming section”). Two disc we are absolutely proud of. And beyond all this………Is there still a reason to release a cd? shops are closing…or the traditional ones are going to resist while the big ones close? is it better to release vynil? and download? let’s go digital?? it’s so HARD to find and get some exposure for this music! Still, I resist. Actually I do it for the love of music. Too strong! In any case the debate is open for the future about how to release stuff. “Rings of Fire”, “Craig+David” and “The Ill-Tempered piano” will be released on cd….and the improvised projects…..don’t know. Portare avanti un etichetta è difficile, specie con la musica che pubblichiamo, di certo non per tutti, anzi. Ci vuole una passione e una tenacia pazzesca a non mollare tutto, specie quando malgrado tutti gli sforzi è così difficile vendere un po’ di copie. beh, comunque lo sapevo fin dall’inizio. Comunque seguo le mie visioni e pubblico quello che penso possa avere senso per questa etichetta.Tanti critici del Rock e del Jazz ci seguono e ci danno il loro sostegno, questo è sicuramente una buona cosa. Il lavoro più importante come sforzo produttivo (un IMPONENTE sforzo produttivo!) sarà “Rings of Fire” (speriamo entro fine settembre), stupendo lavoro dell’ottetto di Cavallanti e Tononi, ospite speciale la “star” del violino Jenny Scheinman e poi un manipolo di ottimi musicisti italiani. Poi ci saranno (inizio settembre) due nuovi dischi di cui siamo davvero orgogliosi e fieri, il favoloso duo “Craig+David” (dettagli nella sezione delle novità in arrivo) e il sorprendente Nicola Cipani (sempre la sezione novità e sempre all’inizio di settembre). Poi avremo tre notevoli session di musica quasi completamente improvvisata, registrate recentemente con il meglio della scena avant/jazz/rock italiana (Craig David ospite speciale in una di queste)….ma al di là di tutto ha ancora senso di questi tempi pubblicare dei cd? quando è così difficile “piazzarli” per chi come noi è “trasversale”? E i negozi piccoli chiuderanno ancora o resisteranno mentre le grandi catene discografiche abbassano le serrande? E il ritorno del vinile? E il download puro? Facciamo solo digitale anche noi? Dei lavori suddetti per esempio non so ancora in che forma i prodotti derivanti dalle session improvvisate usciranno (mentre gli altri nominati usciranno ancora in cd di sicuro). Guitar aces and label friends Jim Campilongo jammed together in San Francisco on the 7th of July . The Jim Campilongo Trio and The Scott Amendola Band (with Nels) were sharing the gig that night. Why are we writing about this? Because Long Song has had the idea and has been trying for a while to put together a quartet session with Jim and Nels plus rhythm section (Scott A. on drums). The guys are all very interested into doing this but Nels’ commitment to touring with Wilco always postpones the idea. In any case this should have been the very first time they finally played together, and Jim was so kind to send use this picture[/lang_
I nostri amici e grandissimi chitarristi Jim Campilongo e Nels Cline hanno suonato insieme a San Francisco il 7 luglio (la serata vedeva esibirsi il Jim Campilongo Trio e poi la Scott Amendola Band, con Nels). Perché scriviamo questo, e cosa ha a che fare con noi? la Long Song sta cercando da tempo di registrare una session in quartetto con Nels e Jim più sezione ritmica (sicuramente con Scott Amendola alla batteria). I musicisti stessi sono molto interessati a realizzare questo progetto, ma i continui impegni di Nels con i Wilco lo rimandano a non si sa ancora quando. In ogni caso pubblichiamo la foto che Jim ci ha gentilmente mandato, visto che questa è stata comunque la prima volta che i due hanno suonato insieme
